Electrical Safety Tips
At Mayfield Electric & Water Systems (MEWS), your safety is our top priority. Electricity powers our homes and businesses, but it must always be treated with caution. Following basic electrical safety practices can help prevent injuries, fires, and outages.
Power Line Safety
- Stay at least 30 feet away from downed or damaged power lines. Always assume they are energized.
- If you see a downed line, call MEWS immediately and keep others away from the area.
- Never attempt to move power lines, tree limbs, or debris that may be touching electrical lines.
- When using ladders, antennas, or working on roofs, always look up and stay clear of overhead power lines.
Tree Trimming & Outdoor Safety
- Only trained professionals should trim trees near power lines.
- Keep kites, drones, and other flying objects away from power lines and substations.
- Call 811 before digging to have underground utilities located.
- Keep outdoor electrical equipment dry and properly rated for outdoor use.
Home Electrical Safety
- Do not overload outlets or extension cords.
- Replace frayed or damaged cords immediately.
- Keep electrical appliances and cords away from water.
- Install and regularly test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.
- Use surge protectors to help protect electronics from power surges.
Generator Safety
- Never operate a generator inside your home, garage, or near windows or doors.
- Generators should always be placed at least 20 feet from your home.
- Do not connect generators directly to your home’s wiring unless installed by a licensed electrician with proper transfer equipment.
- Improper generator use can backfeed electricity and seriously injure utility workers and neighbors.
Teaching Children About Electrical Safety
- Teach children to stay away from substations, transformers, and power lines.
- Never allow children to play on or near electrical equipment.
- Remind children never to insert objects into electrical outlets.
What To Do During An Electrical Emergency
- If someone is in contact with electricity, do not touch them. Call 911 immediately.
- If a power line falls on your vehicle, stay inside the vehicle and call 911 unless there is fire or immediate danger.
- Report outages or hazardous electrical situations to MEWS as soon as possible.
